I'm changing the tuning on my ibanez RG series from E to C#. I wanna do this myself and learn a bit on the way, but are there any serious pitfalls i should be aware about? Perhaps also a recommendation on string gauge, as I am now playing on lovely .09... Do I need to buy new springs, or can I just adjust them?

You will have to go up a gauge or two at least (probably .011s or .012s). Maybe try and get hold of Gareth/Vintage Vibe and see what he recommends - he has a lot of experience with downtuned setups. You'll still need to tweak the trem spring claw, but shouldn't need to replace or add springs.

Dude C# tuning rules!!! I would recommend you change your strings to Ernie Ball Beefy (54 42 30 22p 15 11). When I saw the light and moved to C# tuning I did a little bit of truss rod tuning and the rest is up to the bridge settings (string height, tension, ect...). Not very difficult, just time consuming >☹
