The earliest known Fender Stratocaster is up for sale. The sunburst Strat, serial #0100, was produced in 1954 and has had only two owners over its sixty-year lifetime. While not the lowest serial number (David Gilmour has #0001), Fender records show 0100 was the first Strat shipped and sold.
For the last 30 years, the guitar has been owned by Fender historian Richard Smith, the author of the book
Fender: The Sound Heard Round the World. Smith, has enlisted the help of guitar expert George Gruhn, owner of the legendary Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville, to sell the instrument via consignment.
