Earliest known Strat for sale

The earliest known Fender Stratocaster is up for sale. The sunburst Strat, serial #0100, was produced in 1954 and has had only two owners over its sixty-year lifetime. While not the lowest serial number (David Gilmour has #0001), Fender records show 0100 was the first Strat shipped and sold.

For the last 30 years, the guitar has been owned by Fender historian Richard Smith, the author of the book Fender: The Sound Heard Round the World. Smith, has enlisted the help of guitar expert George Gruhn, owner of the legendary Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville, to sell the instrument via consignment.

Well, consider that Clapton's '56 Brownie sold for $450K, SRV’s “Lenny” sold for $623,500, EC's Blackie for $959K and Jimi's Woodstock Strat for $2M...

Not sure Gilmour's would actually fetch THAT much (relatively speaking, of course) as its sole claim to real fame is its serial number. Everyone knows it's not actually the first.

Then from a celeb-value perspective it's long been owned by Gilmour, but AFAIK has never really been played live or on record, so it doesn't have the kind of pull Brownie, Blackie, Lenny or the Woodstock Strat do. People associate DG with owning it, not playing it, which I suspect would make a huge difference.

I still think we'd have to pass the hat around a few times, though ?

not forgetting Dylans strat he played at his first "lectric" show went for close to a million dollars in January....that's more n 10 million rand ....or around 1000 times more than I paid for my beloved strat....boggles the mind
