Hey all, I'm doing a statistics invitation for a math class I'm taking and decided to compare the color of one's main guitar (the one that you instinctively reach for) and their main genre (blues, jazz, rock, punk, etc.). Can you tell me the color of your guitar and whether you play classic rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jimi hendrix, etc.), jazz (i.e. Pat Metheny, George Benson, Mike Stern) or punk (The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones)?

This is a hard one. Many guys like myself don't have one specific guitar for a genre. I have 4 main guitars that get reached for equally... I personally use a black strat, a honey natural Tele, a natural Archtop and a matte redsuperstrat type guitar and mainly play alternative rock, folk, a bit of hard rock... But then alternative in itself is a broad genre because I play anything from Queens of the Stone Age to aKING to the Arctic Monkeys to the Foals to Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don't usually reach for a specific guitar to play a specific type of music. Some bands do require a tele or a LP sound but others have so much gain or effects that it makes little difference.
Sorry if I'm confusing things though :sorry: If you need the statistics you can just go with Black strat for alternative rock? ?

Generic answer would be:
Black for metal
Natural wood for alternative
Gold or tobacco burst for blues
Pink for hipster indie
Me... Natural wood for metal
Black for hard rock
Tobacco burst for rock/blues

Don't help the stats much though ?

If you're looking for more of this kind of information, the forum has options to create a poll. That might be more useful to you (mods, I hope it's okay for me to suggest this)

All styles of music and honeyburst.
Actually all my guitars are various shades of yellow/amber/orange. Not always by choice (I'd rather have a mix), just the way it turned out. When the right one comes along at the right price, I nab it regardless of colour. Unless it's pukeburst - I can't abide pukeburst (Antigua).

Key in statistics is finding out the right questions to ask. ?

Some dudes (like me) only have one guitar on hand.
So I reach for my maroon quilted maple whether I'm playing blues, death metal or straight rock.
Jayhell
Blues - Blond/Yellow (Tele)
Bues-Rock (With Band)- Cherry Red (ES-339) and (Strat)
Hard Rock - Black (Fernandez)
Bass - Cherry Red (I see a pattern)
Acoustic - Black...
Ok, so it comes down to the fact that I like Black and Cherry Red Guitars and mostly play Blues-Rock to Hard-Rock. But when I tone down for some "clean" laid back stuff I'll play my vintage Tele. Ooh, I should buy a Black and Red Tele, Maybe a thin-line with humbuckers, then technically I need only one guitar. ?
Lethe
Metal - Purple
Rock - Sunburst
Rock - Green
Squonk
I only have 2 electrics so it's quite easy
Natural (Peavey T-60) - Blues, Metal, Prog Rock, Jazz
Blue (Tanglewood JZ503) - Jazz, Blues, Prog Rock, Metal
BobZ_1989
I only have 2 guitars myself, they're both blue... and I mostly play blues and rock
Hammeron
Got 2 electrics and 1 acoustic.
Play my own stuff. Hard Rock, Metal and Celtic Folk.
Use the Cort V on stage with Epiphone Goth Explorer as backup.
Use Ibanez Talman acoustic for the Folky stuff.
All 3 are BLACK!

so mainly i play blues, blues-influenced rock stuff on electric. i have three electrics; a gold top les paul with p90s, a wine red les paul with humbuckers, and a white sg with humbuckers.
on acoustic, i play blues, folk, and folk-rock-y type stuff. the guitar has a spruce top with a natural finish.
i very much doubt that you're going to find a general correlation between genres and colours of guitars. in metal you may find more black guitars than other colours, but even then i'd wager it'll be a general thing.
if you're looking for something a little wider, and perhaps a little deeper, i'm sure visiting the 'rig rundown' sites on the web, searching for guitarists by genre, and checking who plays what, might give you additional info.
i dunno if that helps...

I mainly play bluesy/rock/hard rock, BB King to Black Stone Cherry. I also use all 3 my electrics for everything but some of them do certain things better, so......
Cherry SG - Rock/Hard Rock
Black LP - Blues Rock/Rock/Hard Rock
Natural Sheraton - Blues/Blues Rock/Rock and if I want a more Jazzy tone. Also has an awesome clean tone. (upgrade pups and hardware)
The colours was also mostly by chance, good deal at the right time.
Charlie4
Smokeburst and (DB)sunburst for my 2 electrics.
Jazz - metal and whatever is in between. 8)

I had no idea what an Antigua finish looks like, so obviously I had to Google it straight-away. "Pukeburst" nails it!!! ?
