Plenty of less disreputable options there. Ry Cooder, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Little Feat (Lowell George and Paul Barrerre), David Lindley, Jimmy Page .... OK not all of this is anything you'd call Death Metal, but maybe it's a chance to broaden horizons ? The original Fleetwood Mac with Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green. Loads of great blues and cajun players. ZZ Top. Mick Taylor laid down some slide for the Stones.
If you want to challenge your notions about "country" then you should check out lap-steel monster Jerry Douglas. An amazing player.
