Doc-Phil - I've used the Anvil before, for some reason on my guitar it doesn't quite do the job in a mix (I'm a bit of a nut about amp sims, so have gone through all of them - if you can find a free one that I haven't got I'll buy you a beer 8). But will check out Variety of Sound, thanks for the suggestion.
Julian - just had a listen to some of your stuff, sounds killer!
I also thought the Anvil wouldn't work for me at first as I found I had to drive it a lot more than the other amp sims, but combine it with the TPA-1 and TSB-1 and it sounds amazing in the mix. Whether you're going for a metal or more classical rock tone, it's fantastic.
Have you heard of the Mercurial Harlequin preamp vst? It's some Russian dude who has made a whole bunch of pre-amp vst's, including a JCM800 emulation. They are quite good (but extremely CPU-intensive - if I activate over-sampling at x2 I already start to overload by Core2Duo 3gHz CPU). The site that he has them up for download is extremely slow, so do some google trawling and you should find a link to the download.
I have listened to the track... everything sounds okay except those robotic vocals. I have read what you have said above about them... and yes, they detract from the rest of the track and must be removed immediately ? they do give the song a bit of a Dethklok feel, but are too loud in the mix and don't do the track any favours! The guitar tone is good, but the bass seems to dominate the mix for me. The drums are passable in the mix, but alone aren't the best, presumably due to the single velocity layers which is giving that 'machine gun' effect. The only way you can get away with using free vst's for drums is if you manage to set up shortcircuit with multiple velocity layers. I'm not sure if this is possible as I have no experience with shortcircuit, but if not, I think you should put out some money and get a decent drum sampler ?
