I'm not dissing it. But they became a very big deal here a couple of years ago. THE thing to have. They are fashionable. I know complete technophobes who have a Kindle.
I'm not against the idea that Kindles (for many) were a fashion item. My sister's certainly suffered that fate, used a lot for a year and then dustballed. I quite liked the easy reading screen, but it was a one trick pony. Imho - a Galaxy tab is a better device all round. I dig the 7in Galaxy Nexus - 90% of the time I prefer reading on this than a actual book. The main exception for me are car magazines, they just don't yet translate to screens/monitors well.

I think it's easier to pirate books than music (quicker at least). I've seen torrents with the entire Kindle library in mobi format online, and it's updated every so often to cater for new releases.
+1.

I'm amazed at the ebook industry - my mate works at kindle direct publishing in CT and the growth in that side of the online world over the past few years has amazed me. Why bother with music anymore - you're more likely to make some $ publishing a book... ?
I don't think so. There are a lot of ebooks going at very low prices or just being ignored. It's cheaper to publish this way but it doesn't guarantee sales.
I was being somewhat facetious... ? - though I'm told quite a few people pump out cheap eBooks, 1-2USD and make money by moving a lot of them. Travel stuff & how to xyz style dummies guides apparently do well.
The idea is that that people tend to buy a bunch of cheap books at a time on a certain topic (E.g. Travel the Cape or teach your self guitar) and many don't get around to reading the books they bought. While there is a refund policy on eBooks, if you never to get around to reading a crappy book - you'll not ask for your money back or if you do, it's not worth the effort of asking for a refund.
