Weird thing: I'm a huge guitar lover, but his vocals first caught my attention. Will go and check out the older stuff.
His vocals were one of the most interesting things about him, and certainly became more distinctive with the passing of time. He once said "there's a gap between the words and the music, and that's where my voice lives."
I think he was much underrated as a vocalist. To me his voice was almost another instrument, with the sound of the words and his articulation being as important as the words themselves. Certainly he was a very distinctive vocalist, and the timing of his delivery was marvelous.
