It's Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who had her big hits in the 30s and 40s. She was a child prodigy and ultimately a pioneer. Being a black woman guitar player already was breaking barriers, but she was also one of the first gospel stars to cross over and have secular hits. So she was a prototype for Aretha Franklin. Interesting to hear that she's also considered a direct influence on Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley.
The opening scene is from a TV show shot during a famous tour that also included The Reverend Gary Davis, Muddy Waters and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.
