you never think it will happen to you until it does.
this is a public service announcement.
I have a few guitar floor stands, the ones with the support for the neck. some are padded with foam and some are padded with rubber to prevent nicks and scratches.
I remember reading at various times, warnings that some of the padding substances can interact with the guitars finish,
well I discovered yesterday that the rubber padded stand has melted / disolved the nitro finish on one of my strats.
the guitar had been in the stand for a number of weeks untouched, and when i picked it up yesterday I discovered a filthy sticky goo of what used to be the nitro finish on the neck - melted right now to bare wood.
dont let this happen to your guitars - either remove the rubber padding from the stand, or cover it with something so that your guitar does not make any contact.
I have now taken felt material and covered all the rubber with it - next i will have to get the neck redone.
use it, dont use it.

Sorry man, that sucks a lot. You should at the very least write to the company that makes the stand and tell them what happened. Maybe they will find it in the goodness of their heart to buy you a new one ?

Thanks for the warning! I'll cover mine right now!!

It only seems to happen with Nitro finishes from what I've heard. Sorry to hear about your guitar man.

Yeah - it's a very specific reaction between nitro and PVC.
Fortunately nitro can be repaired relatively easily, because new coats blend/bond with the old.
What make of stands BTW?

One trick I've heard of is using cuts from an old white t-shirt to wrap the mounting points on the stand. It's well-washed, not dyed and soft cotton.
I've been using a Hercules double mount stand for a while. No issues with the nitro finish on my LP, but I've noticed that since the padding of the stand has worn, the weight of the guitar hanging (coupled with being removed & replaced) has made two small wear dents, just before the headstock flares out completely. It doesn't bother me since she's cherished but a working instrument with some marks from time anyway, but it's time to reinforce the padding.
If you have a Hercules double or triple stand, it might be worth checking that the padding on yours is still solid & not wearing thin too.
