As a little snot gobbler with hippy parents in the sixties, the Beatles White Album and Cream's Disraeli Gears certainly come to mind - played over and over on a portable Denon, battery operated, STEREO record player in the wilds of Zambia!

After that, and many years later, it was Knopfler and that beautifully clear Strat sound! Thin Lizzy and Lynyrd Skynyrd too!

That's your opinion and you're allowed to have it, but sadly it's wrong ?

I'm just kidding. I love Knopfler's tone but seriously dislike some other tones that other people seem to go crazy about. We all have different tastes.

Haha, Well played Alan! ? Ok so maybe I'm over exaggerating ? Though I don't know why but on a few songs he does sound tinny to me... Still one of my all time favourite players in case some of you were thinking of forming a mob ?

I'm a total noob and I suck... But I guess I have a right to be inspired too... Beatles-across the universe, lynyrd skynyrd - simple man, guns n roses-patience, pink floyd-wish you were here, guns n roses-sweet child o mine, queen-friends will be friends, don mclean-vincent, audioslave-be yourself, marmalade-reflections, hinder-lips of an angel, johnny cash/nine inch nails-hurt, dire straights-money for nothing... That's off the top of my head, I could carry on forever... But I'll spare you all the pain of my unfocused, probably sketchy music choices ?

Hey Chocklit Bhai - There must be another post that can help you with your hearing problems!!!!! ?

IMO Dire Straits' first two albums were absolute beauts as far as Strat tone is concerned. The third was also very good although IIRC he was using Schecters by then.

Dude, I agree with you there! Those first 2 albums are both amazing! To this day I still get goosebumps listening to Sultans of Swing!

Yes and? There's a clip of Richard Thompson, another dedicated strat player, being interviewed about guitars on The Old Grey Whistle test by some charlie who manages to mispronounce "fender". At one point Thompson says "this sounds like a piece of wood with wires stretched across it. Which is what it is."

That's the point. That's how strats sound. And early on Knopfler was embracing that sound.

Growing up it was definitely Dire straits that inspired my love of guitar based music. Water of love and down to the Waterline, off their first album are still huge favourites of mine. Like an earlier post, I too thought that guitar playing was only for a special few, and only picked up a guitar 2 years ago. Wish I had done it 20 years ago :-\ my current inspiration music wise, is the Black keys. Awesome blues rock outfit, with great rhythm and simple but catchy riffs.

As the thread states - what song or riff got your juices going. That you had to learn because it really turned you on.

I was already a fan of The Shadows, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, John Williams and Julian Bream. But what made me want to play was the guitar solo on KISS Alive II. :-[
