I know this topic has been on the forum a few times. As every good fan of music in the early 70's, I had a copy of Woodstock and this was my favourite track...

Songs/ Riffs that inspired you to Play Guitar....

Growing up it was definitely Dire straits that inspired my love of guitar based music. Water of love and down to the Waterline, off their first album are still huge favourites of mine. Like an earlier post, I too thought that guitar playing was only for a special few, and only picked up a guitar 2 years ago. Wish I had done it 20 years ago :-\ my current inspiration music wise, is the Black keys. Awesome blues rock outfit, with great rhythm and simple but catchy riffs.

As the thread states - what song or riff got your juices going. That you had to learn because it really turned you on.

I was already a fan of The Shadows, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, John Williams and Julian Bream. But what made me want to play was the guitar solo on KISS Alive II. :-[

I heard Joe Satriani's "Always With Me, Always With You" on 5FM (of all places) in the car one day...I don't think I'd ever heard an instrumental electric guitar piece before. I had never heard anything like it, and I had no idea I might one day be trying to actually play it on a real electric guitar.

I was thinking just the same, when I heard South of Heaven, I had to get a electric guitar and turn it to 11, these had a similar effect

MegaDeth - Hanger 18 (I just couldn't believe this tune when I 1st heard it - how did he do that?)
Metallica - Jump in the Fire, Four Horsemen, Seek 'n Destroy, Master of Puppets, Battery, For Whom the Bell Tolls. (Funnnn-ky riffs!)

The opening Riff to "Hey you" and the solo from "Comfortably numb" off the Wall album - Pink Floyd. Still working on the Solo, but there is no substitute for Gilmour's touch I guess 8)

Actually, it's all come back to me.

The first time I heard something and thought that sounded like a cool thing for me to do was Joan Baez performing the Phil Och's song "There But For Fortune". It was so complete - great lyric, great tune, lovely arrangement that was perfect for putting the sentiment of the song across and you didn't need a band and a massive amount of equipment to do that. There was the way the guitar part went up at the end of each chorus and then dropped down again to open the door for the next verse.

So there you go. I wanted to be Joan Baez.

Don't laugh at this, but for me it was the guitar parts in Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" from 1985 and the crunchy riffs from "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins in 1986. Top Gun is still one of my all-time favourite movies and Ray-Ban Aviators have never gone out of fashion.

Was actually playing a few AC/DC riffs tonight and I remember when I was first starting out how rockstar it felt to be able to play 'Back in Black' and 'Highway to Hell' after only a few months of playing 8) Honestly AC/DC made those simple major chords sound so epic!

Also the Arctic Monkey's - 'I bet you look good on the dancefloor' is up there with one of the songs that got me hooked
