Best lower output humbucker

I'm looking to replace the duncan in my Schecter. I think it's a '59(I'm not sure though), and through my Orange TH30 it just seems to be muddy with too much low end. I'm hoping a low output PAF type humbucker(suitable for classic to mildly hard rock) will give me the tone I want.

Any suggestions to what I can get at a reasonable price? ?

There is no "best" but a Seymour Duncan Seth Lover model is apparently a very good take on the classic PAF which designed by Seth Lover himself

Errr.. at around 8k the 59 is considered a low output paf style pickup... so perhaps your schecter has something else,?

Easiest would be to che k under the hood, although a quick look at the braiding etc could also give you a clue.. if you have a multimeter maybe test it.. 8k or tnereabouts is a 59. 7.5k if its the neck model

The seth lover model ismodelled on the 55 paf. Has an alnico 2 mag. Output is also around 8 fwiw
The 59 after the 59 paf and methinks an alnico 5. Not sure that change will fix muddiness though

Id be inclined to try slightly hotter. Pearly gates puts you in the 8.5k output arena.. not strictly speaking a paf though

Or my favourite for fat tones, ibanez super 58s

I have only been playing for a few years, and have never wanted to change pickups until I got this schecter a little while ago, and as such I have never really investigated specs etc.

I prefer the stock bridge humbucker of my blacktop strat to the Seymour Duncan in the Schecter, unfortunately, these are just labelled as hot vintage alnicos without any output or other specs given on the fender website.

I'll definitely also look at higher output humbuckers now.

I'm going to take the Seymour Duncan out when I get the chance and just check exactly what it is.

Given what you pay for good Seymour Duncans in SA, you won't pay that much more to buy Bareknuckle pickups from the UK. Like a few of the "boutique", scatterwound pickups, they seem to capture a certain something that I hear in recordings of original PAFs that is missing in the more mainstream PAF clones.

+1 to the BKP pickups - specifically the Mules. Or Lollars or Fralins (both of which do the clarity thing well). Plus if you order from one of those, there's a good chance you can get someone to piggyback on your order to save on shipping.

For bareknuckles, i can heartily recommend the blackdog.. again slightly hotter at 9k.. but holy mother, the dynamics ?

These are currently the bareknuckles i use

Picture is rubbish

1st one on left is blackdog, 9k with alnico5
2nd is holydiver, alnico 5 but hot at 15k.. the grown ups jb so to speak
3rd is rebel yell, alnico5 and also hot. Want 80s rock tone on tap.. these are for you
Last is cold sweat, ceramic, around 14k.. least favourite of the lot. On par with a jb at least

Nice thing about bareknuckle is you can customize to your liking.. choose the magnets, colour schemes, covers, plates etc.. and they always ask what guitar its going in to make sure it will fit.

I'm liking the look of bareknuckles now, especially that the price and shipping seem extremely reasonable for what you get.

And black dog is an awesome name for a pickup ? (as it is for a song)

And remember to mail the Bareknuckle guy beforehand to ask him what he recommends based on the guitar you have and what kind of sound you're going for. One of the upsides of dealing with these small companies.

I have ordered myself a Bareknuckle Emerald, which should give me exactly what I want: clarity and a tighter low-end ?

Now the impossible wait for it to arrive begins ?
