I have recently brought in my Tele, a full sized acoustic guitar and a strat copy and amp from Mud island. The Tele and the acoustic both came with me on board in gig bags and fitted in the overhead lockers (heart in the mouth - gambling). The strat copy I disassembled and put in my suit case with the practice amp. I got away without any damages (or taxes) but would imagine that sooner or later things would go wrong. On the last leg to Tete, one of the passengers had two Ibanez acoustics in gig bags and they made him put them in the hold!!! Lucky me!!
It's a scary thought thinking about your instruments being loaded in the hold - especially if your end destination is like mine. People employed to unload the aircraft, with no knowledge or exposure to instruments like this, don't realise how fragile they are.
