How can a guitar tailpiece change the sound? i would think that it could add more or less sustain?
am i wrong?
Taking for example a solid body electric guitar, where one gets a:
string through body
gibson style tailpiece
jazz tailpiece
will a tailpiece add sustain?
lets take a les paul as an example, would it have less sustain if it was a string through body?

Forget sustain - they all have enough. So, maybe one has 16 seconds sustain and another has 17 seconds - does it make a difference to the way you play it or perceive it? You want more sustain, stand closer to a cranked amp and an electric banjo will sustain indefinitely.
It's more an issue of tonality and playability. A trapeze tailpiece (jazz) has a longer length of string behind the saddle which affects bends and adds more resonance than a stop (Gibson). Through body also adds a little resonance.
