Guitar Setup issues! need help!

HI Guys

Having serious issues with the setup of my guit and im not massively clued up having had my guitar setup by professionals in the past.
After a recent re-string, The action was quite horrendous, So I lowered it to a standard of 2mm of bass E @ 12th Fret and around 1.5mm at the High E 12th Fret.

But now i dont just have fret buzz, pretty much from 7th fret down, no note makes a sound, its just a metal clunk as string vibrates on fret.

So I assume i need to adjust the truss rod? can I have a bit of help and clarification on how to resolve this?

I did the Putting of a capo on the first fret and finger on 17th fret and there looks like a good gap of around 1.2 - 1.5mm at the 7th fret.

Ill try myself but if no cigar then Ill take it to a pro setup on monday

Sounds like you went to a higher tension string? That would cause too much relief in the neck. The bridge action should have stayed the same, but the neck relief raised the action. Lowering the bridge fixed the action in the middle of the neck, but caused problems higher up...

If that sounds about right, you need to tighten the truss and raise the action again. fret first and 14th fret and there should be a small gap at the 7th - about 1mm for an EBMM.

Yup I went to 11 guage from 10 and then i noticed the problems with the action...

SO i have now raised the action again to the point where there is no more fret buzz anywhere. action is sititng quite high now at a bout 3.5 mm above 12 fret

So i should just give the truss rod a turn about 2 clicks clockwise?

How long do I need to wait in between turns to let it set?

Well, I hope there are no clicks when you do it - that wouldn't be good. ? 1/8th to 1/4 turn should do it. Retune before you check again as the strings will likely end up a bit sharp, putting a little extra relief in.

It's going to do 95% of the movement immediately, so leave just a touch extra relief. Retune and recheck after 24 hours to tweak once it's settled. If at any point you start getting buzz in the middle of the neck, slack of the truss a smidge more to add extra relief.
