AlanRatcliffe I saw a site recently where the guy had a few variations on this type of thing - one with a 12AU7 and just a few point-to-point components that looked interesting and easy to build. The guy also had an overdrive with something like five different and switchable ICs - bit of a "mad scientist" type.
