Hi all, hope you have / had a good holiday season.
Does anyone know of someone that either bought themselves or built themselves a CNC machine? I am looking at getting one either by building or buying but seems the building will be WAY cheaper.
I would just like a South African opinion as to where to acquire parts, materials and pricing etc.
Thanks in advance ?

I can't offer a real South African opinion but I guess it very much depends on what you intend to do with your cnc. Mill? Lathe? Laser cut? Sew? Apart from that, size and power would also be parameters. You can get stepper motors, servo motors, drives and the like reasonably well around here but my thinking is you'll wind up with either cheap and difficult to control or expensive and professional, easy to implement.

Hey,
One of my colleagues at work just imported one, he got it in the first week of December, I think it came from Germany. He did quite a lot of research first to ensure spare parts are available.
I think it cost him around R80k. I will get some more info about it for you when I get back to work.

So I am done drinking cold beers next to the swimming pool and am back at work... :'(
Any how, I chatted to my colleague this morning, he bought the Heiz S1000, says it cost around R75K. He chose this one because parts are available locally, if not they will get parts shipped in from Germany, they are established and have a good reputation.
There is apparently a local brand but the costs are a lot more for the same capable machine (something like R250K).
Hope this helped.
