I agree with this but it also depends on how competent you are at woodworking... I went for an ES335 style guitar for my first build and despite being around woodworking from birth, I still haven't finished... In fact it's been put off to the side while I fiddle around with solid body fender styles to get accustomed to the process.
Build a strat or a Jazzmaster... Theres a lot more woodworking practice than a tele with all the belly cuts and contours...
Unless of course you order in the carved/pressed back sides and top and you just stick it all together... It's less rewarding but hey, you got the guitar you wanted in the first place.
