A possible South African Guitar Expo in the future?

I am speaking under correction, but I believe this will be a first for the local guitar playing community?

Love to attend. It's just what the industry needs IMO. I suppose it'll be in Joburg? I might come in with a Cape based exhibitor, and/or maybe Norio and I can wrangle something (depending on costs...) who knows?

Nice idea, and great for us guitar loving types, but most luthiers in this country are not rolling in money and unless a sponsor can be found to pay for decent facilities this looks likely to leave somebody out of pocket.

love the idea ...financials are going to be prickly though, unless done on private property or donated space (ie avoid the conference venues as they are hellishly expensive)

but I would love something like this and would attend and support ....

make it our own lil namm with possibly all music instruments with a dedicated section for guitars/drums etc

Now we're talking, a ZA style NAMM (We'd have a spit braai..., beat that! ?). I was thinking that just guitars might be ambitious, but including other -ahem- muso's could be a great idea. Including electronic musicians could attract the likes of BPM, educational facilities (Boston, COPA, Cape Audio college, Soul Candi, etc...), Roland, Yamaha...

Agreed, the financials would take some doing, but sponsors would go a long way to helping cover the basics - The bigger stores come to mind (Bothners, Music Mate, Music Connection, Marshall Music) - perhaps even some of the brands I listed above (Roland/Yahama).

I feel for the organiser though, it would be a serious undertaking - A labour of love, I doubt there'd be a profit in it...

While it might be difficult to do a Healdsburg type affair here, a full on expo would include all the distributors for the bigger brands too - in fact, they would be it's bread and butter. Smaller builders would mostly make a plan, even if it meant teaming up with other builders to afford a spot.

Bert Koster used to do a yearly percussion expo here in Cape Town, with workshops, talks displays and it was always well supported by the distributors and the public.

While the bigger, more modern venues might be expensive, there are plenty of affordable older venues too...

you'd definitely need a venue, although the bigger, newer ones would, i agree, be prohibitively expensive. but i agree limiting it to one type of instrument would be shortsighted. we just don't have the numbers and/or resources (financial or otherwise) as guitar players/sellers/builders/etcerers to warrant it. so think bigger, perhaps - a music expo.

there's a camera expo every year, i guaran-freakin-tee there are more than a few forumites who've visited that one. bring in the drummers (yep, even them), the keyboardists, the brass and woodwinders, the bassists, the other stringed instrumentalists, even the programmers and djs. set up a few acts as entertainment, possibly a compo. suddenly there's a whole lot more backing for this thing, mebbe?

i dunno. it's a thought. the idea of a music expo is massively appealing. what needs to be sorted out is what the event is about. so that no matter who/how many exhibitors are brought on board, they're all true to the essence of the thing. otherwise all you have is a whole bunch of folks gathered around a big white elephant and nobody wants to talk about it. ya dig?

I'm sure they will be some strange and rare items been exhibited and made available for sale.
