Doing the Bieber

I have been working out Mistletoe by Justin Bieber for the last couple of hours. Didn't take long, only 4 chords!

Trying to Jazz it up a bit....

My daughter has to sing this at a school function in a couple of weeks and she volunteered me to play guitar for her.

What a compromising situation. I can actually say that I am doing a Bieber cover and it will be live......

I was just looking at that now... A young guitar pupil I'm teaching likes Justin Bieber & Parlotones, so I'm trying to find something easy to teach him... I'm not winning, there's a lot of barre chords. ☹

capo 2 for the Justin Bieber song and drop the Chords a whole step... or just drop it down a whole step. hehe. you can use a pencil and elastic bands for a cheap capo. lol.

I have kept it in A but have Hendrixed it a bit! Helps when you have to play the same chord pattern for the entire song.
Still thinking of taking some FX along to dirty up the acoustic tone. Think I need a Tube Screamer for my acoustic setup..... :-\

Thanx. I do use a capo myself and often change the chord structures to make songs easier.
My learner pupil will have to get a capo on 3rd fret and strum open chords.

WRONG!!! :-[ That's transposing upwards... I would need to transpose downards and move the capo to the second fret...

You gotta play what pays the bills - in appreciation from your daughter at least, this should earn plenty of credits. Just make sure you use a gum guard in case you start grinding your teeth while playing.

Wasn't there some thread recently about damaging yourself on the day of the Gig.

Not that this is a gig, just one song among Christmas Carols and general end of year depressing rituals.

Burned my right index finger this morning on the fleshy tip, so fingerstyle might have to give way to a plectrum.

And I have now developed a toothache the size of Nkandla that no known medication seems to relieve.

No time for dentist, will have to try some Whiskey on it just now..... ☹

I think that was me. I get "hand karma" before most gigs. Usually this is just a torn nail, but once it was slamming my thumb in a car door. I said "fiddlesticks" or something like that.

I've fortunately avoided Bieber, but I did have to bring myself to accompany a kid while she belted out a Katy Perry song. It was the only way both of us could be mildly happy. Other than that, and less offensive I taught a kid Prime Circle songs (and in fairness it was more for the kids Mom ?)

For all the hate that goes on against pop stars I gotta say I'm not as anti them as I probably should be...

I mean I think Katy Perry has a great voice, as evidenced by this video, she's a little pitchy at first but when she settles in you can really hear that it's not all studio tricks in her case.

I also have her albums and dig em, I mean the writing is catchy, the production is phenominal, what's not to like?

I also think she may just be the perfect human female specimen, but that's another discussion entirely

Then there's Justin Timberlake who I've always thought was awesome once he went solo, and his live band is just scary, I mean the medley performance on Jimmy Fallon was honestly just jaw dropping, everyone moves, everyone's into it and there's not 1 mistake, even his pitching is right on game the entire way. I've always wanted to session in a band like that, it would be heaven ?

Then there's Bruno Mars, who's basically trying to be Sting, but regardless assuming this isn't mimed then again another absolutely mind blowing band...

Or someone like Grace Potter who generally churns out airy fairy pop rock also seems to have a truly monster voice when the need arises, as shown by this absolutely jaw dropping performance:

Oh, and Joe Satriani being a part of it doesn't hurt either ?

Anyhoo, it's not as bad as people make it out to be, personally I like it when students ask me to show them a song by an artist I would have personally never checked out myself, it can be pretty interesting.

As for the 4 chords thing, well Cool and the Gang's Celebration has essentialy just got an octave that plays from start to finish, and it's still awesome ?

I don't spend any time actively hating anything, I wouldn't recommend it either, but it was a little awkward hearing an eight year old singing about taking too many shots, blah blah blah...this is actually the first time I'm hearing the song sung by Katy Perry herself...ha ha ha. The eight year old wasn't too bad singing it either actually ha ha ha

Was quite a blast.

What we didn't realize was that there was going to be hundreds of people there. So she was hectically nervous :-[

But she pulled it out the bag, started off slowly but got confident as the song went on. Another great thing was that her friends stood in the front row and cheered her on like she was pop idol ?

At the end of the performance one of the other performing musicians who played that Tele in the photo, remarked that he could tell I was a Hendrix fan! So me deciding to "Hendrix" the song to break up the monotony of the 4 chords worked!
