Dom, if you can stretch your budget, the Core PRS Starla will be better sounding than the S2 for sure. Not that the S2 is a bad guitar, but it aint the same as the Core models in terms of construction methods or pickups & hardware (Korean vs US made). If you do go with the S2, you'll still be getting a very good guitar, so don't let my comments sway you either way. Buy what you like and what you can afford. PRS don't make bad guitars IMO. I might perhaps be tempted to call some of their pickups non-flattering names however...but I won't. ? To their credit, these days with the Starla, 57/08, DGT etc. they are making some great pickups to compliment their guitar designs.
all valid points. so i've owned two prs guitars before. a standard 22 in mahogany and, much later, a custom 22 in a beautiful green finish. the latter is now in the hands of a fellow forumite. i know what these guitars represent in terms of quality. i've also played a few se models, and i've been impressed by the playability and the sound/tone/whatever you wanna call it. if the s2's come in somewhere between these, they should be pretty darn good.
but the point for me is that i'm prepared to go in at a lower price point for what i perceive as greater value (value here being a trade off between cost and quality with a little bit of me being happy with my purchase down the line). in each of my three tokai purchases, it was a no-brainer. the quality was absolutely there, and the cost was well below half, if not less, in each case, than the equivalent.
i have no doubt the core starla will be a better instrument than the s2. but will it be worth the extra 7/8grand, plus the trip to ct? (add on another 3g or so.) that's what i need to factor in here. and i would need to go down there, because i have a 'no-give' policy of not buying a guitar i've not played.
i'm also prepared to wait. if the s2's come in, and i'm not that impressed, i won't buy. and maybe then i'll deem the trip to ct worth it - if the core starla is still there. (big if, i know, but i'm not in a rush, and neither is mike's starla, it would seem...)
but seriously. i can't tell you how much i appreciate you putting me in touch with mike. i just hope there are no capetonians around who now have a hankering for this very pretty young lady...
thanks again
