The Cool Cat Tremolo arrived while I was out working today. I'll plug it in a bit later for a test drive, but impressions for now:

I've taken a few looks at Danelectro's range from time to time, and I must say I like the retro '50s look of the Mini Effects range. The Cool Cats have a quirky raygun gothic kinda look to them; like Marmite I think you'll like it or hate it. You definitely won't confuse it with anything else on your pedalboard (unless you're a massive Dano fan). Right now the jury's out on the looks for me, and I'm really more interested in how easy it'll be to step on the go button on stage. Funky/odd metallic burgundy colour, but that goes with Danelectro's company-wide oddball vibe.

For a just-below rhymes with "Hoss"-priced pedal, it seems well put together. Solid metal casing, easily accessed battery compartment, and the knobs have a quality feel to their movement - solid, no flimsy plastic feel.

Unlike most pedals, this cat's (pun intended) control knobs are not located on top of the pedal. If you look down at the unit from a player's position, they're on the top side. I don't know if that's just trying to be different for the sake of being different or to prevent you from accidentally bumping knobs, but it does mean that you won't quickly see what your settings are (if you're in the habit of changing them during your gig). Considering that most of us will probably use a particular trem setting for most tracks, it's not really an issue unless you make it one.

You get control knobs for speed and depth, while the third is simply a two position switch to select between soft (vintage) and hard (think "How soon is Now") settings. A trem seems like a one-trick pony until you look at how many genres and players use them. Nifty Fifties and '60s surf music are the stereotypes but trems are used from indie to Joe Bonamassa, besides keeping your Creedence fans happy.

So: Solid construction, true bypass, decent trem sound for the price (take a listen to a few YouTube tests) and all for R650.00 including the lightning fast delivery - less than the 2nd hand price of the green-coloured one many gigging musos use. No-brainer choice to me. I'll add another 5c once I've plugged it in. Thanks Alan and Norio.

I've got to head out to an event, but I've snuck in a few quick playarounds. And I'm very happy. There's a lot of headroom to play with (speed and depth), and the Hard setting + capo gets you that Johnny Marr "How Soon is Now" feel, close enough to sound right.

To give you an idea, at present the board looks as follows when fully populated:

T-Rex Fuel Tank (the blue 'un) - Boss TU-2 - Dunlop Crybaby from Hell - Behringer BO100 Blues Overdrive (still on the board because with some tweaking it gives a fuzzy crunch that works) unless, depending on my mood, it's swapped with - Ibanez TS 9 - Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion - Boss CH-1 Super Chorus - MXR Phase 90 - Danelectro Cool Cat Trem - Boss DD-3 Dig. delay

That's running into a Marshall DSL401

The trem alone works like a trem. No noise to it when engaged, although the footswitch engages with a real clunk. If you've ever selected 1st gear on a BMW bike pre-'2005 then you'll know what I mean. Bright blue LED for the stage lets you know it's on alright.

On Soft with the Depth set to 11 'o clock and the Speed just after 3 (looking straight at the knobs), adding in the DD-3 gave a really nice shimmer / sparkle that I'll definitely use as a chorus / rhythm sound.

I've had nowhere near enough time beyond a quick 20 minute jam to really say much more than that, but definitely money well spent.

Did anyone actually do the deed, and get a 'transparent OD'? I'm still seriously liking the sound on that clip, and would have loved to have been in a position to nab one of these, but alas, my financial status has recently plummeted to an unsatisfactory level.

One thing I will add about the Cool Cat chorus is that if its anything like the original bigger cool cat chorus (the 18v one), then it will be a fantastic pedal, and my old 18v'er worked wonderfully well with guitar, as well as bass too! Infact, its probably the best chorus I've used on bass so far!

So anyone else want to share what they got in this special?

I got a fish and chips eq, which I have tried with my bass and I like thoroughly. For the price, it sounds really nice and useful!

I just recently passed on a v1 transparent OD to a buddy of mine and I'm regretting it. It sounds absolutely magic, arguably better than the Timmy that it's a clone of.
