Bob-Dubery
Saw these guys last night at the Brazen Head in Sandton. Slavin is a pretty good player, and brave too because he allows Sez Adamson into his band. And Adamson is something really a bit special - switching between guitar (in various tunings), lap steel and pedal steel. He has chops to die for, and his note choices, his sense of what is harmonically possible are constantly interesting.
There's a lot of bluesy crowd pleasers, but they stretch out too. Adamson and Slavin do some great duets on Ennio Morricone numbers (but no whistling!), and Adamson has a couple of gorgeous solo spots on the pedal steel, playing jazz standards such as "The Nearness of You".
There's a lot of very high level musicianship in this band. If they're in your neck of the woods you should not think twice about seeing them.
They're back at the Brazen Head on November 30th.
Generally this is starting to look like an interesting venue. They use a side room ("the library") off the main pub, so the people who are there are there for the music.
