hi ya , i went to visit Murray Kuun a renown luthier to test drive his most recent archtop jazz guitar ......
go to his site to check out all the relavent specs....
but the short list is it's a full hollow , thinline 'ish i say that cos it's kinda between a full archtop depth and a semi like a 335 ...
beautiful vintage feel fat neck ...think 59 roundback tele . but not too wide.... extremely comfortable
pickup is a hand wound one from some guy in the USA specifically earmarked for jazz
the design like all of murray's work is exciting... he has strayed from the conservative design ....yet despite the radical change it retains a very vintage look ..so a fussion of modern and traditional ...but still not so outlandish that us conservative jazz guitarists would reject it .... very interesting asthetics on this instrument
it's meant for playing plugged in ... so despite being hollow it's not aimed to be a full acoustic archtop ... but who uses them anyway except for playing on the couch at home....
body size is small and comfortable and it has a great balance
tone wise , it delivered .....i easily got a very usable/giggable jazz tone
my only negative and i mentioned it to murray is the lack of a tone control on the guitar ..... but an easy add and at a few rands .... but for me i like to have the tone control under my fingers as when playing in different sectors of the neck the tone can need a hint of a tweak up or down
would i buy one ...hell yes... ? it's a solid hand carved top archtop and totally hand built by murray himself so i need to do some saving before i can afford one but it was a pleasure to demo this and worth every cent
here's a pic
below is a video murray shot while i tested it out ...... i am playing through my ZT acoustic lunchbox amp no effects except reverb
