Would not recommend building your own pickups, but hey with the prices of seymour duncans and kinmans nowadays what should we do?
It would be a fun project on cheapish guitar.

Yeah - I've seen that before. Fairly ingenious the way he uses things like CD trays as flatwork and a manual hand drill as a winder. You can save a lot of the effort he went through by buying bobbins (and all the other pickup parts) from places like Stewmac or Guitar Jones. A cordless screwdriver/drill works well as a makeshift winder and if you look around the net, you will find lots of info on building them from things like old sewing machines ? Jason Lollar's pickup making book (sadly out of print) covered building your own winder.
