Arabian/Egyptian Acoustic Guitar Sound

I once heard that if you remove an acoustic (steel string) guitar's frets, one can achieve a kind of Arabian/Egyptian sound? Is it true, cause I was thinking of getting a cheap second hand one and trying it out.

What do you guys think, waste of time/money or is there some truth???

Almost, but make it a nylon string guitar. The oud (Turkish/Egyptian guitar) uses 11 nylon strings arranged in five courses of two unison strings and the lowest string a single.

I converted a guitar for Chris van der Vyver of the Gilgamesh Ensemble years ago and researched it then. We ended up going for a simple six string nylon with the frets removed.
