I love their extended range, peanuts, chips and their rice cakes. Yet to try their "very-peculiar-milk-chocolate" though.

The only reason a person of sound mind and body should ever eat Marmite is to enable him/her to better sympathize with people in under-developed countries without access to decent food, or some kind of foodie masochism. I swear, if I never heard of Marmite in my life and someone gave me a jar of the foul stuff, I'd assume it was some deranged lunatic's attempt to make a semi-edible glue which could safely be stored within reach of infants.

It's the dietary equivalent of Norwegian Black Metal.

I think a lot of people don't like it because they spread it too thickly. It really is vile if you spread it like you would jam or PB, but get the mix right and it's lovely on toast or fresh bread.

+1 I've converted a couple of people by simply showing them how to spread it properly.

Marmite on malba toast = yum! Personally, I love the stuff...

Side story: My house mate's girlfriend is from Finland, and he gave her some marmite on a white bread bun once. She gagged and looked like she was going to throw up!

The stuff is retched! It was developed as a way to extract information out of terrorists after even the most heinous torture methods failed (don't quote me on this)
As a young'un I once got caught out for swearing and was offered the choice of soap, fresh green chilli's or marmite in my mouth as punishment.... I thought marmite would have been the safe choice being that its supposed to be edible and all (ha! Lies!) and recieved a tablespoon of the "extract of evil"..... Lets just say that the soap would have been a better choice.... ☹

I LOVE Marmite. Man....on buttered toast and with tea or coffee!! To dip even. Or with fresh cheddar on top! Good, good stuff. I had forgotten about Bovril but it was only in an emergency when the Marmies was finished.

Vegemite is not bad........but a clear distant second to Marmite. I get my Marmite/Vegemite from a shop that imports SA/English/Aussie food stuffs.....including SA meat pies .....curried mince, curried chicken, steak and kidney, Cornish Pasties etc. You do not find these meat pies in general stores here......no pork pies etc. No bunny chow's!!!! LOL!

I have not been able to get a SINGLE American to like Marmite. They gag at the smell even and most say it's like eating beef bouillon on toast. Savages!!!!

Man, my favorite memories are when I lived in Westville, Natal......after school, homework done.....a rainy day perhaps....cold.......and I'd have the latest unread Beano, Beezer etc or one of the war comics......Battle Picture Library, War Picture Library etc etc.......and my mom or our maid Antonia, would make me Marmite on toast with some nice tea. I'd snuggle up on my bed and read and eat the snacks. I also liked Marmite on buttered ProVita.........or smoked snoek!

Good days.......best days of my life really. Out of school, into the military...into the real world. Non stop taking strain after that it seems.

I found out about 2 days ago from a friend who is living and teaching in Gabon, that 'Marmite' is French for 'cooking pot'.

There was a place in JHB - back in the day -that used to make toasted Marmite and tomato salmies. To die for!

Marmite is the veggie one. Yeast based I think ...
