Only 'cos it's rare so you haven't seen it often enough to get used to it. They were quite a common sight in the '80s. Actually makes a whole lotta sense, design-, ergonomics-, stability, durability-, transport- and weight-wise. The original cricket bat jobs are still the greatest travel guitars ever made.
Ned Steinberger is an out-and-out genius. He just went a little to far in removing
too many of the imperfections of the instrument (notably wood), which made them a bit too sterile. Later luthiers like Klein went back to wood and improved the ergonomics:
