I have finished my 18w build and she sounds great. With the VVR, I can use it as a practice amp or I can irritate the neighbors to no end, not to talk about the “boss” ?. As any it goes with any “normal” person, I have started thinking about the next one.

Now, I have two options (and no, solid state is not an option):
1. Build a dual channel
2. Or build a single channel, clean only.

The idea with option 2 is to build a clean head and then use the current 18 for its drive capability. Then link both to the same CAB. I will then use a solid state switch to switch between the two heads (see pic below). Any thoughts on this?

Then I have a question: If I understand it correctly, the characteristic of the valves allows the drive capability of the amplifier. The pre-amp has a lot to do with this.
1. Do I understand it correctly?
2. What is the difference in the pre-amp to ensure a clean output?

Thanks.

You can do that but you'll have to put a load on the amp that is not connected to the speaker or else risk the transformer going. Also, it may be tricky to get that switching to happen without noises.

My advice: Learn to play that 18 watt and learn to control the drive from the guitar, it's tricky in the beginning but you'll get used to it and after a while you only want to do it in that way.
I'd say just mod your current amp. Sending the signal in a triode later or something might work.

Maybe instead of another 18watt, build an amp that'll add to your tonal palette?
If there should be any switching involved, it should be in the preamp and not after the phase inverter. I agree with ez, you may want to keep it simple. If looking for some new project, maybe add reverb or pre out / main in?
