You pretty much get what you pay for. Those models that sell for a couple hundred in the stores are toys, but I have seen a few decent quality known brand name ones like Tanglewood popping up lately - even some on Gumtree in the last few months.

Just trying to guage which are the mid to entry level "non-toy" models.

You can tell just by looking at them - there's a big difference. Look for mahogany or similar rather than a brown finish over a cheap wood. Real body binding is usually a tip-off too. Neck inlays rather than paint or stickers. That kind of thing...

I have an aria that sounds nice. Other options for mid level are Lanikai, Kala and also them Ibanez exotic woods ukes. They come with a built in piezo. I like ukes ?

I bought a cheap tanglewood Union series electirc/acoustic, with a cutaway. It cost me around R750 a year and a half ago.
Nice for the price, but a long way off a great instrument...and every piece of wood on it is a laminate.
