Hello all. I play a weird mix of guitars. The output on my Tele is far lower than my Blazer, I've raised the Tele pickups as much as they want to be raised, I'm considering lowering the Blazer pickups to get a similar gain level.
What do you think?

Get a clean boost rather. Tweak your pickups for tone, not volume..

OK, then part II, I find I have too much gain coming from the Blazer anyway, quite a hard harsh sound, perhaps a compromise on a boost and pickup height?
MikeM
How's this, first tweak each guitar individually until you have something that sounds nice on both. Then you can get either a clean boost, or a "Volume stomp" for when you need to match the volumes? That way you don't sacrifice on how they sound for how loud they are

Sounds good. Can you give me a "raise them or lower them" pointer on getting a darker warmer, looser sound?
MikeM
Typically, closer is warmer and darker. But it could also be down to the pickups in guitars.. Not much will make a ceramic humbucker in the bridge sound loose.
I think the most important goal is getting a good balance between the eq of the pickups.. If you have the neck too close, the bridge will sound terribly thin in comparison etc.
Just remember, the closer to the strings, the more bass and darker it becomes as well as the less sustain you'll have because of string pull
Lastly, don't forget to use your tone control and amp eq!!!

Much appreciated! I am finding some tone that I am a fan of right now... how far away from the strings is too far away (yes yes, I know... ?)
I've got a vintage SD pup in neck position and when it's pretty far away, it opens up the way I like?
Is it anything goes, or is there a limit to common sense?

Thanks Joe!
