Vodacom has decided that a local act is needed for their amazing line-up this year, that includes Skunk Anansie, The Hives, alt-J and Boys Noize, at Vodacom In The City. So they’re given one local band the opportunity to play alongside this stellar list of artists.

All bands need to do is fill out the form, agree to the T&C’s and submit – It’s that easy. A panel of fine judges will determine the top 5 finalists and the public will then vote for who gets to Open The City at Vodacom In The City on the 4th of October at mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, Johannesburg.

Any local band can enter the competition for a chance to rock in the spotlight on the 4th of October 2013 at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Joburg and take the stage at Rocking the Daisies on 6 October 2013.

HOW DO TO ENTER

Complete the submission form from Vodacom In The City. Read and agree to the terms and conditions. Your entry must be submitted by 13h00 on 11 August 2013.

QUALIFYING CRITERIA

Your band must have a minimum of two years of live performance experience.
Must have played at a minimum of one of South Africa’s major music festivals with an audience capacity of 5000 or more.
Must have a minimum of 45 (forty five) minutes of original material.
Must have been play-listed on a commercial or campus radio station.
Goodluck!
    Hmmm... A little contradictory imo..
Any band can enter... And a little lower.. Band must have xyz..

Either way, im sure there are a few guys on here where this kind of exposure will work?!

    Good luck ?
Call me a cynic, but I read that as: "we don't mind paying international artists, but want to get a popular up and coming SA band on the bill for free".
Im generally cynical of these types of competitions...
But.. Can still be a good way of getting enourmous exposure!
And if you can make it work for you, then even better!

From the terms and conditions of the competition:

"1 (One) band stands a chance to play at the Vodacom in the City music events (“the Events”) that will be taking place in Johannesburg and Cape Town on 4 and 6 October 2013, respectively. A performance fee of R15000.00 (fifteen thousand rand) excluding VAT, in respect of performance at the Event in Johannesburg on 4 October 2013. A performance fee of R15000.00 (fifteen thousand rand) excluding VAT, in respect of the performance at the Event in Cape Town on 6 October 2013. Vodacom will pay the costs in respect of the wining band's technical and hospitality riders, as well as, the travel costs as per clause 19."

"Travel expenses, including economic class flights within South Africa, accommodation and transport, in respect of the performances at the Events will be paid for by Vodacom."

I have no idea what the "right" amount for such a performance would be, but 30 grand for a weekend's gigging seems like a lot of money for an up-and-coming band ?
and I thought you would be happy that they so much ? most musicians(bands) always complain of to little pay. Upcoming or not its works out to 15000/2(gigs)/5(band members) =1500 each. That excludes the groupies pay and for the time you spend to get the two gigs transport, ect I doubt they having anything left at the of the day.
              Its 30k, not 15...
But still, compared to what the other acts on the night are getting, or what a more popluar and established band might get, a lot less i think...
But its still exposure, and theyre paying for your travels...
