I bought a EHX LPB on gumtree yesterday, super stoked because I always wanted a simple boost pedal but never wanted to pay the price for a new one. So I got home, plugged it in and jammed around a bit. Generally I like it, it really fattens up my clean sound and pushes my valve amp over the edge, BUT I was expecting a bit more linear boost, it seems to add a lot of bass when used with my overdrive and distortion pedals. My Bad Monkey is already set to max Highs and when I initiate the LPB I get a super bass boost instead of a transparent boost. This sucks as it was my main intention for use. I read on-line one can do a lot with swapping out caps and stuff, but I'm not good with this sort of thing and don't want to render the thing useless.
Who can mod the pedal for me and what will it cost?
What ideally want is switch that I can flip to to change between the stock sound and a more treble boost sound. Apparently this circuit is identical to the Screaming Bird and is an easy mod but as I said, I really shouldn't be doing it myself.
I'd like to use the standard sound for the one or two clean songs I do and the treble boost for everything else.
Thanks guys.

Do you happen to know if the current LPB uses SMD parts like some of the other new EHX stuff? The circuit is so small that it shouldn't, but if it is that'll make mods trickier.

I don't know I'll have to open her up, apparently some of the newer ones have SMB parts, but this one looks old enough that it might not.

Hi Jay
Seems like it would be a case of changing the input cap to suit your taste.
Not sure the size of the box, but I could possibly put in a rotary switch with 4 or 5 positions to suit different guitars.

The space in the pedal is very limited. I tried the pedal at a gig on Saturday and it was way to bassy, even on the cleans, so I am considering not even using it for that. I guess now I just want to change the input cap to something more transparent. where do you live peter?

I don't know this pedal but agree that SMT is a problem. Sounds like you need a Colorsound Overdriver - it has Treble boost and cut - bass boost and cut - Gain (grit) and HUGE VOLUME!!!!!! They are so loud that Volume pots had to be retro fitted to all the old ones. (mine is a '74) They are also pretty quiet. I hardly ever turn mine off.
Oh and by the way I build clones :?

From what i have heard and read, your "clones" are outstanding pedals ?

Petercornell actually modded my LPB for me. He put in a Switch with variable low cut. It's freaken awesome now, I still wanted to write a review about it but never got round to it.
Thanks Peter!

Nice work Peter ? And Jayhell, good to hear you found someone to get it sorted and it does what you want now.

More info…
So what he did was ad a switch on the side with a couple of setting, from flat (stock) to three levels of low cut filters. He used 100nF, 68nF, 47nF and 22nF caps respectively.
The results are subtle at first playing at low volume at home, but at band practice the effect was a lot more pronounced. I really like the way it is now, on the lowest cut, it sounds pretty neutral to me and that’s what I wanted. It actually sounds best on bass guitar, then the effects of the low cut is allot more pronounced and sounds awesome forcing it thru overdrive.
What I am actually using it for now is for vocals. Currently with my financial situation using what I got I am singing thru a bass amp but it always felt so weak, now I am using the LPB as a pre amp into the bass amp and it is sounding sweet (ish). Well, it’s loud enough now. Anyway…
Thanks again to Peter for his time and expertise. I’m really enjoying this simple multipurpose pedal. I just think I should call it something else now that’s not really a LPB anymore.
