The topic for August is Progressive Metal. The usual rules apply. Entries to be PM ed to me before Monday 26/08/2013. If you don't know what Progressive Metal is here's a few examples from Mixerboy: = = =

I'm wondering if the 4 instrument tracks are going to be enough for this? I mean, if we're introducing progressive elements to an established genre like metal (normally 2 guitars , a bass and drums) do we sacrifice a guitar to accommodate another instrument like organ, synth, didgeridoo (haha)?

progressive doesn't only have to be a different instrument... it is also odd time signatures... and from what I read, alternate sounds... possibly scales from different music... basically anything "different". I think...

Well if you bring in a didg and a hurdy-gurdy you gonna encounter some rather different scales and signatures coming along for the ride!
I am a guitarist so my efforts will be restricted to guitar and guitar only! ?

Fair enough.

Just starting to realize how tricky this is going to be. I have a basic rough track down that sounds pretty good, but is it progressive...? I doubt it.

Back to the woodshed.

One thing to remember - your progressive may not be someone elses progressive. So enter whatever you feel like entering - if its out of your norm, then its going to be whatever you want it to be. Except for a unicorn... and a mutant ninja turtle... they're exceptions and excluded from all pacts made with the devil.

Yea. My band Tamla Kahn have often been called different and I agree with that.
But I doubt you could call us Prog Rock per say.

It's actually quite difficult trying to find a concrete explanation, seems that if you take any musical genre and make it a bit "weird" and "unusual" then you can slap the word "prog" in front of it.

I don't agree with this list:

1) Longer songs (or “epics”)
2) Time changes (e.g., odd time signatures)
3) More complex, sophisticated instrumentation and compositions
4) Superior vocals
5) More complex conceptual ideas / Heightened, lyrical content

....as it pretty much describes most classical music and older pop-swing-jazz

I think progressive jazz has been around when metal was still only ore and rock was a mere pebble. ?

quite confuzzled right about now. been trying to come up with some ideas but it's tough. my mind is currently a desolate place without even a single tumbleidea rolling through it.

No. So longs as only 4 instruments are playing at a time.
