Social forums.....as bad as TV ??

Guys....are you spending hours and hours on social fora....? Isn't it as bad as watching TV ? I'm a member of four of these and I can tell you I sometimes feel guilty about the time spent on these.....am I alone ?

TV isn't bad...
Wasting your life away in front of it is. Same with any pastime.... TV, video games, reading, competitive walking, GFSA..... It's all about moderation.

Well come to think of it, maybe we should start a team. I mean, I've been walking for about 33 years myself so feel pretty adept at it and primed for competition

They can be - especially Facebook, where you can spend a day and not achieve anything.

I limit time on fora (and there are a dozen in my circle of interests), reading only stuff that truly interests me, where I can learn something or share something unique. Even here, where obviously I spend more time, I don't read every single thread, let alone always answer those I read.

I think with any of them, the key is structure - check in once or twice a day (or ten - depending on time), read, research (if needed), respond, then go play guitar, walk the dogs, hug the kids, etc.. Slower fora, like the acoustics and audio engineering ones, I'll only check in once a week, but even the busy ones like TGP I can get away with only checking once a day or even every couple of days.

I've found the worst thing you can do with any forum is sit around refreshing, waiting for new content (fine if you don't have - or are avoiding - other things to do ?). Especially on FB, where there is always new content and most of it is inane or repetition.

I have found this forum and facebook very useful... firstly this forum started me composing, I had always wanted to before, but just didn't take it seriously. Being in touch with other musicians just got things going.

And at the moment I get sooooo many tips on facebook about open calls for exhibitions/ competitions/ festivals. The work and opportunities for exposure come to me, it's great! Yes, I do get stuck checking for new things a bit much, but rather that than be in the dark.

Agree....for some, these fora could be worthwhile as you say. So is TV.....I like watching some sport and documentaries (nat geo, history, etc) and the odd movie. I guess the key is "moderation", as Chocklit says ?

At least there is a vague opportunity to discover a new venue to gig at on facebook ?
