Steve Vai on Tom Waits

AlanRatcliffe

I'm a big Tom Waits fan but was quite surprised to read that he's one of Steve Vai's heroes too.

Tom's amazing, I don't get people who don't like him.Would love to see him LIVE!

Daniel Durchholz described Tom's voice as being "soaked in a vat of bourbon and hanging in a smoke house'

He is amazing but I can see why some don't like him. He can get very dark and weird... which is probably a big part of why I do like him. Great writer though IMO.

Did anyone see Tom in Seven Psychopaths?

AlanRatcliffe

He's that very rare thing - a true original. You can hear his influences (not the least being Captain Beefheart - another true original), but the blend he comes up with is still unique.

Yeah, great as always. He seems to choose his roles carefully.

Hmm... who knew? I have always believed that to be a good a musician you must draw inspiration from a wide variety of styles of music, guess its kinda true. An eclectic palette is an asset methinks

Much as I love Tom Waits I must admit that this performance, the part where Tom sings and it changes over to Jagger, would be the perfect candidate for a Halls/Vick's Vapo-rub advert.

Toms smokey, pneumonia voice - Inhaling sound – Mick Jagger.
Thank me later ad companies. 8)

Hehe, I think the Ad agencies can try all they want. Tom will never sell any of his songs. In fact I think he took coca cola (or some other huge company) to court and won cause they released an ad with a track that sounded like one of his.

When I listened to his older records and I heard some of those ballads, they ripped my heart out.

This one gets me every time. Dunno why but it does.

I also love how his catalogue ranges from songs like that to brutes like this:

I love Tom Waits. His entire catalog, but Closing Time is one of my top 10 albums of all time. 'Rosie' and 'Martha' are incredible. Great clip with the Stones, Aubs.

My personal Tom Waits favourite: The Piano Has Been Drinking (not me). Gets a smile on my face every chorus ?
