I never buy that line of defence. Pointing out that some group or other to which one belongs are treated as less than equal doesn't mean that the party doing the pointing out has issues. Generally it means that the other group is being treated as less than equal.
And there's a difference between making a joke about a bass player because s/he plays a bass, and making a joke about a female bass player because she's female.
