Nice Vid. Van Halen claimed he modified an idea from Jimmy Page, but all to often we forget these maestros with a traditional and flamenco background, those guys can do amazing things on the guitar (always have), unfortunately they not plugged in!

I don't think EVH claims to have invented the technique. It certainly predates him. Usually what happens with these things is that players come along and modify or extend an existing technique - and I think it's fair to say that EVH did that.

I remember EVH said that he got the idea from seeing some one-hand tapping that Jimmy Page did at a live concert. He was so possessive of his new 'invention' that he wouldn't face the crowd when he did it, until they had recorded their first album.

Did you see the devil-horns the Italian guy pulled when he did that contra-bass thing? Definitely from the future, haha! ?

Eddie never claimed to have invented it and in the mid 70's he never had access to youtube or international TV for that matter so chances of him actually seeing this dude are pretty much zero...... his folks were also musicians and its possible they had seen this living in Europe an possibly told him of it or something...

it was the press an fans that attributed 2 hand tapping to eddie, I don't recall any interview where he claimed it to be his.....

in the early VH shows he did not want ppl to see what he was doing , this is possibly influenced by Gene Simmons though .... as shows prior to that he would do it in songs etc , but not eruption itself as at the time it was not conceived yet.

There are written references to a player in the 1930s who who occasionally used his right hand index to add in notes. Can't remember who it was though...

Angus was using a finger or plectrum for tapping in the late '70s, early '80s. As were many other players too. But Van Halen took it to a whole new level by incorporating hammer-ons and pull-offs, turning it into a whole style of playing in itself. That's why he gets most of the credit for it - and rightly so.

Of course, other players also took it further or adapted it into their own style - Stanley Jordan, Michael Hedges, Brad Gillis (AKA the guy from Night Ranger who does the eight finger tapping thing ?), but they all owe a debt to VH.

Possibly. It was in an issue of Guitar Player in the late '80s that was dedicated to the technique. Unfortunately that was a time when I was more interested in VH than in "old players", ? so I didn't pay much attention.

So does Brad Gillis, but they were all parallel development. Certain things become obvious when you start extending to using 8 or more fingers - like the neck angle thing. There is the Warr Guitar too - Trey Gunn's instrument of choice.

I believe Emmett tried to get Stanley on board as a Chapman Stick player at one point, but Stanley preferred a six string.

For what it's worth you can find classical Turkish pieces that require two handed tapping - so it pretty much way predates anything being discussed in this thread.

This is the youtube page for the dude who made the 8 string microtonally moveable fretted nylon string - Somewhere amidst his collection of videos is one of these pieces.

I can't remember what it's called, but it's definitely there, most of the pieces names are not in English so it's highly unlikely that I would remember it...

There was also a video of a guy playing a Saz (I think that's the name) doing an old Turkish folk piece where it was all basically combinations of taps and strums - Can't for the life of me remember the name though cause again it was foreign and made use of characters that require a knowledge of key combinations I do not have ?

Yes first random video I clicked on has some typical tapping. The composer died in 1973. I'm definitely going to check out more of this, those microtones are unerving and beautiful at the same time ?

My old man taught me some basic tapping for flamenco when I was about 6 or so. That was a few years ago :?
And it was a technique he learnt when he was a kid. I think it forms an integral part of guitar[ing] in some culture's, which was invented a LONG time ago, but the guy in the OP's video has some mad skills man ?
