This is hardly the first Martin made from something other than solid wood. Their economy models have been using these sorts of materials for some years now. They always stick to a solid top though - and generally the errrm.... UNNATURAL Martins still sound like a Martin.
Sapele is increasingly used by many builders as a substitute for mahogany. The general colour is similar and sonically it's in the mahogany ball park.
