Ja this grates me a bit... He's good and all but a signature?? This is kinda like when Gibson made the Jonas Brothers melody maker....

I guess it's cooler though coz he's better than them and the proceeds go to charity

I like the look of this guitar, but it seems there isn't much wood in it- richlite (ebonol) fretboard, HPL (formica) sides and back.
How does sapele sound for a soundboard? I like the bookmatching and subtle flame

This is hardly the first Martin made from something other than solid wood. Their economy models have been using these sorts of materials for some years now. They always stick to a solid top though - and generally the errrm.... UNNATURAL Martins still sound like a Martin.

Sapele is increasingly used by many builders as a substitute for mahogany. The general colour is similar and sonically it's in the mahogany ball park.

Ebonol is great for fretboards, and I'm open to the idea of HPL sides and back. I'm more curious about a mahogany top instead of the softwoods I'm more used to. I think the solid top is by far more important than whatever is going in the sides and back anyway - if the sides and backs mattered as much, no-one would play an Ovation

Mahogany topped martins are not that unusual. Guild have mahogany topped models as well. I'd bet those aren't the only makers.

The thing is, that Martin looks nothing like the Martin he actually plays on, so how "signature" is it really. Unless he starts playing one like that i guess, if i wana buy a signature I'd like it to look like the artists real thing.

I think it's quite a clever signing by Martin. Ed Sheeran is credited with reviving an interest in guitar amongst youngsters who are otherwise mostly interested in the more Pop like acts where guitar does not feature much. I also read somewhere that since he came onto the scene, there has been a big increase in demand for smaller bodied guitars in general and smaller bodied Martins in particular. By endorsing him and bringing out an affordable, small bodied signature model, Martin is sure to get a nice big slice of that Beginner's Pie.
Also, while a lot of the beginners who get one might lose interest in playing guitar, there will be others who persevere and who will sooner or later be looking for an upgrade. Martin will reckon that since they already have their foot in the door it would be likely to assume that a lot of those upgrades will be to some of their other models. And once you get the brand loyalty ball rolling you probably have a customer for life.

Nah... He plays a regular Martin guitar.... I think it's OM size? (I really don't pay attention if its not Dreadnought or Jumbo ?)

Most of the pics and videos has him playing the Martin LX range (Travel Guitars), I nearly got one myself, but opted for the Cort Earth Mini

Yeah, I don't think I've seen him playing a tenor guitar, but a 3/4 size 6 string (might be in tenor territory in terms of tuning).

Tenor guitars have 4 strings, slightly shorter scale. They're tuned like a viola or 4-string banjo. AIUI they were designed so that a banjo player could double up on guitar.

I don't keep a look out for tenors, but the person I most often see playing tenor is Neko Case.
