Blues Talent Discovery in JHB and PTA - The South African Blues Society

Hi all

I recently took over the South African Blues Society. We're holding two talent discovery nights in August to scout and discover new talent.

Would love for you guys to be there if you're bluesmen or spread the word if you know blues people.

Great stuff. Are we allowed to come and watch even if we are not blues players? Is there a charge?

And what exactly are you going to do with the talent once you've discovered it? Give them a recording deal? Management deal?
I did't look at the FB pages 'cos I'm not that much into blues, but for me this sort of thing is a rip-off.
You're gonna get guys to come play. Bring their friends along to watch. The friends will eat and drink and spend money. The venue owner will be happy cos he's making money. The players will go home with some "exposure" in their pockets. Great. Just another "Battle of the bands" scenario.
Sorry if I got it all wrong, but musicians have been ripped-off through events like this for ages.

This said, you will probably be flooded with entries 'cos there are a lot of guys desperate for gigs out there.

Cool, I contacted them via Facebook, I want to do my little one man blues thing, I just need to record some solo stuff and put it on soundcloud. Does any one know when the closing date is and how many songs I would need to perform?

Euh... maybe a bit your judgement is to quick....

I would play at such event, I am not a professional player, nor do I earn a living with music, not all, and will never do,

It is always fun i think to meet other people with the same interest and do some playing for each other...

to avoid the scenario you described above, maybe you should host it in your house with free drinks and food ? to avoid the rip off scenario

by the way: if somebody is interested in teaming up with me for this event (vocal/guitar) let me know ?

Agreed, looking forward to the event! I like the initiative.

I would offer my band's services and perform at this event, even though I'd never win the prize,
simply just to do what I love... play guitar and sing the blues 8)

And???? August has come and gone. Did the 2 "Talent-Scouting" nights actually happen? And if so...did anyone go play? What was it like?

Or was it a non-event? I see The Stranger made 3 posts in total. All in this thread and he was last active on the 5th of July. Obviously not much going on at the SA Blues Society.

I do believe that someone else took over the event and that they weren't even aware of the forum posts/expectations but I am not sure.
