Scroll Saw for guitar bodies etc...

Hey guys...

How well would a scroll saw work for cutting stuff like mahogany etc. for an electric guitar body?

Before you go and buy a bandsaw, how many times do you plan to do it? Maybe go and buy a jigsaw and you'll use it for a lot of other things as well. But people do it with scrollsaw. So to say bandsaw is better is like saying it's better to drive 90 km's in your motor car than go out and run it. But people go and run it once a year.

I used a scroll saw on mahogany. It worked. It's nice for the tight corners. A bandsaw is better for the overall cutout.

A scroll saw can work, but you need to your the right blade and it will take forever and a day to cut a guitar body. I woul;d agree with a band saw and then if you want to add some special detail, use the scroll saw.

Waaay easier and cheeeper to use a jig saw, with NEW, GOOD BLADES. Cut a bit away from your cut line and sand the rest to the line. A scroll saw, i wouldn't bother, mahogany will most likely slaughter it. A band saw of note will set u back quite a few grand, and, will it really be used enuff' to warrant buying it. A small grinder with wood sanding discs is also great for sanding to the line, and also for sanding out the body contours.

Can be tricky to use a jigsaw for wood of 45-50mm ...
Tricky to keep things vertical as you go around the corners.

But. I've done it. And it does work.
