The eagle-eyed among you may notice that the Sanox's pickups are held in by masking tape - I'm finishing the rosewood pickup surrounds. The Fernandes is a friend's I'm refinishing (Project 2), and the Cort Custom is Bothner's Stock (a salesman cracked the neck by accident and was told he would have to pay for the repair, which sucks as it was not really his fault. So I offered to fix it for them).

What rack effects are you using ?

NONE!

The 10U rack at the bottom used to be my dedicated guitar rack (Line6 Pod Pro, Boss GT-PRO, Roland GI-20, rack mixer, MIDI patchbay, power amp and synths) - all except the GI-20 have been replaced by a laptop, an Edirol UA-25 interface and software. I've gone from 10U to where it all packs into a laptop bag.

I'm looking at the Pod Pro for sale in the classifieds section. How do you rate the POD Pro against the GT Pro ?

Not bad, but I actually prefer the tone of the older POD2/POD Pro (the one for sale is the XT) or the GT-Pro/GT-8 for the effect tone, variety and tweakability. The effects are kind of limited in the XT's as they don't have all the parameters a pro might want to tweak. It makes it simple to operate, but for someone like me it's frustrating as all hell. The GT's are more complicated to operate and don't give great sounds out of the box, but, you can tweak them to do almost anything. The Vox Tonelab pedals are the best balance between tone, power and ease of use for most people - but they only do floorboards, no rackmounts.

On the other hand it's a very good price for a XT Pro - especially with the floor controller too. If you can, try it out and see if it will work for you before you commit. The rack stuff is typically difficult to sell, so you may find if you hold on for a while, the price will drop further ...but then you run the risk of losing it.

What's the Fernandes like, Alan?

I know a guitarist with some great guitars who swears he'll never let his Fernandez Tele go - period. Don't know much about them, though. I see they have what seems a pretty nice website (http://www.fernandesguitars.com/),which I'll troll through, but are their any "unofficial" issues or tips one should be aware of?

Ask VV... It's his. The refinish and change to rosewood board neck made it much darker sounding and it needs a change of pickups to compensate. The new neck (a chunky USA Custom Guitars) is wonderful feeling.

Fernandes used to make really good guitars - the "lawsuit" ones with the Strat headstocks were better than the Fenders of the same period. This one's a little later, but I wanted to buy it from him at one point, but he wasn't selling and then my tastes went to fatter necks (the original maple neck was real skinny). The latest ones are not as good.

Believe it or not, but mostly I use Guitar Rig 3 on a dedicated laptop. My usual setup is too complex for anything else.

However, I just recently got myself a Vox AC15 Hand-wired head and cab as a plug-and-play-shut-up-and-play-yer-guitar-don't-touch-that-dial/knob/mouse
amp. Just something simple to jam with.
