MikeM
Soooo it turns out there was a Mike already on the forum - must have been going crazy or something. So any PMs I might have got in the past week or so, haven't actually come through to me - this would explain a few things. To anyone that's sent or received from my side, sorry!!!
Chocklit_Thunda
Yeah I was actually gonna ask you if my messages were getting through?
I haven't gotten a reply since you asked if I was back in Benoni :'(
But yeah some poor mike is probably getting messages from me like "what the junk man??"
MikeM
Hah, sorry man! Check if the messages are in your outbox and forward em to me? Something seemed fishy... Then a friend confirmed on Facebook this morning
Chocklit_Thunda
Is your inbox working properly again? ?
I don't have any copies of the messages though... I always forget to save em... :-\
All I basically said was that I'm always in Benoni coz I travel through every day, then asked how the TSA was ?
MikeM
Ahhh ok. Well I think so. Send something my way so I can be sure?
There's a setting somewhere on our profile that makes them save automatically.. Dunno why it's unchecked by default.
Ahhhh ok I see. It's pretty cool.. Going to put a different speaker in it though, maybe a vintage Fender one I have lying around, or a old greenback. Even cranked with the 6db boost, there's not any major break up (I think, can't remember right now) so I usually just stack some pedals in front of it. Not bad for R2400...
Chocklit_Thunda
Check if you got it?
Nice to hear. I was considering getting one this weekend. But how does it not breau up with the boost? It should be breaking up at full vol without the boost engaged?
MikeM
Can't be 100% sure, because I did buy it second hand.. But I did even try mismatching the impedance and cranking it. Then I got some drive. Either there are some 12AU7s in mine, or it's designed to be get drive from pedals (I have been using it in the 5W mode, that might also affect things. Will crank it when I am not in my apartment ?)
Chocklit_Thunda
I heard the 5W mode was supposed to break up early? That's what most folk say (some say it breaks up too quickly) so your tubes may be different as you say.
Ah that moment when you're Finally home and you can crank the amp up to 11 ?
MikeM
I've not been able to get my hands on the schematic, but the point at which an amp "breaks up" is defined by a few things, impedance, threshold etc. I'd guess that the 5 watt mode just lowers output and sag more than anything.
Chocklit_Thunda
Seeing as I know sweet truck all about amps I'll just smile and nod. All I got from reading online was that 5W mode only worked with 2 of the 4 valves and I think it goes through largely the same circuit.
My amp knowledge goes about as far as plugging in a few pedals, dropping the gain and boosting the mids 8)

If you're talking about a TSA-15 then it runs on 2 6V6's and the 5w mode doesn't kill one of them. It's more pentode/triode setting. I love my TSA15H. I run in into Celstion Blue equipped cabs and it sounds killer. Stays clean even with boost. I've replaced all the valves with NOS stuff (RCA 6V6's) and I really don't find any reason to haul out my DRRI. Yes. THAT good! Have fun!
MikeM
I was expecting it was triode mode. Still has some kick in 5w though!
Have you perhaps compared how it pairs with the stock speaker vs the blue?
MoJo-JoJoe
One of my cabs is the matching Ibanez cab. It was loaded with a Celestion Seventy/80 stock. Sounded a bit bass-heavy/boomy and quite lifeless compared to the Blue. It was a good upgrade. I would imagine a Vintage 30 or a Jensen C12Q would sound really good also - depending if you're looking to go heavier or milder/cleaner in tones. I should have tried my C12Q in there before the Blue but I was already so happy with the Blue in my other cab that I didn't bother. I also found the amp to be more "open" sounding in 15w mode so mine stays on that setting.
MikeM
Cool, I have got one of those too. Running triodes are typically darker so that makes sense.
I do find myself wanting a bit more airiness from the amp though. Maybe it's because I have it flat on a carpet?
I've got a Weber 12F150 that I'm thinking of putting in... Might make it that much more like a Fender and open up the treble a little. But I also have a 10" tweed voiced alnico from weber that might be cool in there with an adapter, make it a bit lighter too. Haven't put a lot of playing time on this little amp though, and really only got it to use as a practice / travel amp, but I'm reasonably impressed.
Lots of edits, my bad!
