New affordable bass guitar day!? It's a thing right? ?

Picked this up for home use, SX Precision Bass. Put up a wanted ad on Gumtree as I quite like the look and feel of a precision bass but obviously wasn't going to fork out the dinero for an original one for what I want to use it for. Guy responds with a price I was willing to pay. I go have a look at it, its horribly out of tune so I attempt to tune it and then break the G string ☹ Any how, its exactly what I wanted so I pay the man and take it home.

After some Macguyver tricks and an old E string from a guitar I jimmy the broken G string, will pick up a new set of strings this weekend, whats standard size for a bass?

I will say I was quite suprised by this thing, I was expecting cheap and chearful, which it is to an extent but its is but everythings as it should be. Neck straightened out with a few tweaks to the truss rod, vol pot was loose, pickguard off and tighten that down and clean the pots while Im in there. String heights were a bit wonky so I tweaked those and it just got better and better to play. Vol is actually useable, usually on the cheaper guitars once you've turned the knob 1mm theres no more sound.

I'm already browsing MightyMites website to look for a red tortoise shell pickguard and some domed knobs ?

Oh and I suppose I should explain the sticker. It came with it but behind it was effin (?) I'm assuming its a band name. I removed the effin lettering and just thought the other sticker was too cool to remove ?

Stickers came off easily with a hair dryer but left quite a bit of goop, Reinhard suggested surgical spirits after I toyed with using acetone ? Goop came off but you can still faintly see the wording, most likely just a bit of fade, will leave it in the sun ?

Look cool ? I've played one a few times and they do seem pretty good for what they are.

The best to remove sticker glue is Benzine... Keep a bottle under the kitchen sink for the labels on your plates and mugs too.

I would love to have a bass guitar at home and miss the Precision I sold... :'(

Congrats. P-basses are pretty awesome, and SX seems to be respected as solid value for money by everyone who tries one. Leo Fender was a smart engineer, his designs are well suited to mass production, and easy to set up (and upgrade)

45-100 or 45-105 are standard-ish bass gauges (105 sounds a bit better if you want to detune your E string). Round wound is more the classic rock sound. you'll need to find a brand that suits your taste and your bass. D'addarios sounded great on my Curbow but are rubbish on my Jazz. Hartke make nice strings that are pretty cheap

Benzine or naphtha for cleaning. Isopropyl in a pinch. Never use acetone as it will dissolve anything but polyester - including knobs and pickguards, fret dots, binding, etc..

G string on a bass is .045 - .050, but extra long, so a guitar string usually won't fit.

Alan: I tied a guitar E string to the bass G string as a temporary solution, worked and holds tuning ?

After googling for SX Basses and even looking on their website (http://www.sxguitarspain.com/sx_vpbass.htm) Mine has an almost exact fender headstock where as I've seen ones with a different one and even their site shows a different headstock?
