Hi. I have a Schecter guitar with an 85 in the neck and an 81 in the bridge. I hate the 81. I don't play metal; more jazz/blues/rock/fusion sort of stuff. I want to replace the 85 with an 89R split coil pickup to give me more tonal options and put the 85 in the bridge.
Questions:
1. Where can I buy an EMG 89R pickup?
2. Has anyone done something similar? How did it work out tonally?

I used to have an eyegouger into which I put two 89s. It improved tone but not nearly as much as compared to Seymours in the same guitar, for blues. However, for rock and heavier than that, the 89s were better; they seem to be able to get away with more gain. Pinch harmonics become easy as well. I was not over the moon about the single coil tone but again, I am more of a passive pup guy. The single coil construction in the 89 is actually very close the the SA so you can find who's playing those and check out their tone.

I would put the 89 in the bridge to take advantage of the wider tonal possibilities it gives you.

Hi. Picked up an EMG 89 over the weekend at a good price and will have a someone modify my guitar for me. The whole guitar will be rewired to fit a 5-way super switch in place of the 3-way switch. I'll explore the EMG 89 in the bridge option but I'm really after the Fender Strat neck pickup sound.
