I've been looking for a certain guitar, an Ibanez, because they didn't run that long and we're replaced relatively quickly! It's pretty much in the same range as the Gio, but I really like this guitar and the one I have is pretty much had it's time and is not in the best condition (Due to using it way too much.)
BUT!!! Here comes the catch! I see one on one of the clasifieds and my heart almost jumps out of my chest! Seeing is a had almost given up on them! The guy is selling it with a amp, the amp which I would rather not even take not alone try to sell it again! I see the guy is asking R17 000, now if you were wondering, that is Seventeen thousand rand, sewentiend duisend rand! I email the guy and ask, because I'm pretty sure that was a typo and that it's actually R1700, which, in that case, I would probably get the guitar for about a grand, and that would be fair, judging by the fretwear and other little guitarist perfectionist observations.
So this morning when I woke up, I got a reply on his email, he wants to sell me the guitar for R15 000!!!!!! ??? Het wasn't Joking! He really thinks he's going to sell an entry level guitar and a 30 watt sollid state amp for R17 000!!!
This is where I lost it! Normally being a very calm person, I could take it anymore! After years of searching, this guy has the guitar, but is asking the price of a second hand les paul custom for it!
I then sent him quite a long email, not really expecting a reply, but just to tell the guy that he's mad for asking that! Gave him a few links to simular GIO's in the state (ranging between 40 and 150 dollars, and in way better condition) and I told him that he's wasting people's time and being ridicilous!
Was it really that bad to react this way??
Bob-Dubery
He can ask any price he wants for that guitar. It's his right. He's not wasting anybody's time: He placed an advert and in that advert disclosed how much he wants for the guitar and amp together. He's allowed himself some negotiating room, but clearly he's not prepared to go down a whole order of magnitude.
I wonder if you're being realistic. Clearly this particular guitar does not grow on trees, and you don't get much guitar - even second hand - for a grand. Have you checked around to see at what price that guitar usually changes hands? Quoting him the price of GIOs is not much help as, as per your post, it's NOT a GIO.
Shibbibilybob
I'm with Bob. he may well be asking a ridiculous price but that's his prerogative. He can ask what ever he'd like for his guitar. You can make your offer (which, if at R1000, is also rather ridiculous ?) .
What model is it? I recall there was a mad man asking R35000 for an Ibanez blazer strat-type a few months ago.
Reinhard
This is where you play the waiting game. Eventually the price will come down. I have seen amps advertised for 18k and a few weeks later they are on gumtree for 8k.

I fully understand your frustration man... But I am not sure sending him a long mail comparing a different guitar to his guitar will help.
On the other hand supply and demand dictates that the lower the supply and the higher the demand the higher the price... or something like that anyway...
Reinecke
I don't think I'm being ridicilous!
The guitar was discontinued, and replaced, it's cheap for what it does, that's why I want it! And it was replaced by a Gio that is now MORE expensive than the original was! I paid R3500 for mine brand new!
It's not about being stupid, it's about selling things overpriced, and in this case waaaay overprised! Say someone that doesn't know that much buys it, even at a "discounted" R15000 That person has been SCAMMED my friend, because asking that much isn't "Asking your price" It's asking more that 4 Times the retail price for a guitar that is second hand!
It's an AXs's model, and I wouldn't react this way, if I didn't do my research
warrenpridgeon
No one said you were being ridiculous dude...
At the end of the day it's your opinion verse his.
He has something you want, but wants more than you want to pay for it currently.
Reinecke
The guy just replied and said sorry, he took it to a music shop and they throwed some numbers at him and then he took a bold figure and put it on the classifieds. He is going to come back to me with another price
Shibbibilybob
hahah I doubt anyone who doesn't know much will spend R15000 on a guitar when shops sell other guitars that look similar and are new, for R4000.
He's being silly, but he'll realise eventually that his guitar is worth a whole lot less than he currently thinks.
I do, however, approve of your sending him an email to say whatever you would like to about his post or his guitar. And if I'd been involved in the above discourse, I'd have been taking the piss ?
babbalute
Would it not be nice to know what gitaar you are wantning , pics, website and any other info. Did you place an add wanting to buy one ? There might be a few hundred of these for sale in SA but seller have just given up ?
You have all the right to tel this guy he's price is crazy, he has also the right to ignore you or remind of the price he want's. Willing seller....not so willing buyer ? Anyway that's all part of negotiating he. If the price is really high only uninformed people might buy it sooner or later and you missed out. On the other hand this might be for sale for a very long time to come and than just be patient, you have been for a while already. Good luck
Reinecke
It's the Ibanez AXS32 or 42 model
Shibbibilybob
Ah I know those models ? Remember they also made GAX (Gio AX) around 10-15 years ago as well. not sure if it's still made.
My buddy bought an AXS32 around four years ago. Second hand, I seem to recall it costing him two grand on the nose.

Good Morning
Dude , your post just made my day......
I can just imagine you sitting , reading that reply from the owner , and completely freaking out like OMG WTF STFU !!!!AAARRRGRGGG !.
"that is Seventeen thousand rand, sewentiend duisend rand!" :roflmao:
"This is where I lost it! Normally being a very calm person," :roflmao:
on a serious note , me and my guitar friends always let a crazy seller know that they are being crazy.

I often mail guys who, for instance, are trying to sell a Sanchez for three grand. I just say, listen, I'm really not interested in your guitar so I am not trying to negotiate you down or anything, but I doubt you have had any interest in the guitar etc... and I give them a market related price. I don't know why I do it, or if they even bother to change the price, but I just feel that they're sitting there anxiously waiting to sell their gear but no-one will ever reply. Unless they are trying to con someone, that is...

Hehe - see my post above - glad to hear I am not the only one

I have on more than one occasion informed the manager at Cash Converters at the Hillfox ( or is ir Crusaders ?) about the ridiculous prices they are charging for musical equipment.
I had just been to Matt's Music (now Marshall Music) and they were selling brand new Zoom G2.1U pedals for just over 1K, CC had a completely scuffed one with knobs missing going for 1.5K. It was there for about 6 months and then came down to 1.2k and still sat for a few months, then it was on the bargain table for R500.
flatfourfan
screw it, I'll bite........yeah.........you're being ridiculous.
Drop him your details saying that if he changes his mind, then he can call you.

Good idea - tell him to keep it up for R15k, and when he hasn't received any enquiries after a month you are waiting with R1500 cash (or however much you are willing to spend)
