I may be wrong, but I would imagine Fender started leaving them off because most players were taking them off in any case. So no point.

I think it looks neat, but that's about it !!!

I'd think so too. I've seen P-basses, strats, teles with ashtray covers over the bridge. It seems to me that for a while Fender fitted them to everything. Maybe people didn't want to see the naked ends of strings ? or something. Or maybe it was some kind of nonsense class thing.

Can't see it interfering with my right hand and it looks brilliant on that strat. So I vote yes.
It's like a strat with his Sunday bests on to make a good first impression on his new gals father. I like it. 8)

No thanks. Don't like the look and it will definately make muting difficult.

Whilst it certainly beautifies the guitar I think that it detracts from its play-ability. It would be interesting to see if there is any footage of an artist actually playing impressively with an ashtray fitted.

I find completely the opposite. My les Paul is knock-around, tough-as-nails, beat up guitar...while my strat is a real lady.

Could be wrong , but I think the cover may affect the sound
by adding a little (reflected?) brightness.

Same reason why a Tele neck pickup has a cover on it...
to brighten that dull little bugger up...
