Paint and body damage.

Hello again knowledgeable forumites... ?

So, this Ibanez that I bought last week was treated quite badly, or owned by a drunk or blind person, I'm not sure. But anyway it has had it pretty rough.

It has a very thick, resin like finish, and if you look at the chips some of the wood is also missing.

My question about repairing it is, can I use something like Pratleys clear or putty to build up the area, sand it down and then spray the whole body to give it a uniform finish? What would you recommend?

AND

Would I have to sand down the WHOLE body or could I just spray over it after prepping the surface?

I really want to do it properly, but I dont want to make too much of a mission.

Or should I just leave it? :'(

Yeah, any resin-based filler will work (unless you want to go the whole hog and strip it down completely and do a total refin). Just touch up the paint in the damaged area. Unfortunately poly doesn't blend with repairwork so it will always be visible (plus it's hard to credit just how many shades of black there are), but you can minimise that and get it looking a lot better without going nuts. Just overlap onto the old finish and buff the line so it blends better.

I bought some Pattex Metal Repair (How appropriate) and set about filling in the chips yesterday.

This is one of the tail pieces that has set, I did a quick rough sand and it is looking great. My phone camera sucks so excuse the poor quality. :/

I will try get the rest done today as well. ?

I am probably gonna attract flack for saying this - The Paint Job.

You can have a spot repair done, most panel beaters do spot repairs using a blending technique to spray paint areas like that without a whole stripdown and paint .

Unless you know there was damage to that area you will not easily see it as long as the underlying surface has been prepared properly.....

Thanks for the heads up. ? I have a mate that's parents own a panel beating shop, but I was thinking of asking for help after I stuff everything up, like normal. ?

I was thinking of just using glossy spray paint then doing a polishing blend type effort thingy.

I just finished spraying the neck black not 10 minutes ago and I must say that so far it looks quite similar to the body. When it dries I'll get a better idea and then I can start spraying those areas on the body.

Gonna upload some progress pics in a few mins.

I've got a Jackson Kelly, same problem with the sharp points, you can't help but chip those points

Yeah it is certainly easier to chip this type of eye gouger shape, but the main gash on this guit looks like the oke fought his way out of the last pub gig he played at. Whether he made it out alive or not is debatable. ?

Woke up this morning and wow! it's looking pretty good!The paint has dried to an almost exact match. Only in direct sunlight you can kinda see the difference. Maybe a camera will expose it a bit more, hope not though. ? I sprayed the neck again so I'm hoping to start sanding and applying clear to it today when I get back from work.

I'm off to the hardware store later to buy some clear coat and some 800 - 2000 grit water sand paper. Will post some shots when it's almost done. It's quite the transformation I must say! ? ? ? ? ?

Secondly, good work there G-man, horny guitars always get the knicks and the dings, I had a good look at my warlock the other night and I dunno, it's natural patina, I just clean the guitar as per normal and carry on. Expect to pay for them to match that colour as the least that a normal panel shop will mix is 500ml and I've seen that colour............gonna be fun.

Yeah I was thinking the other day "How the hell am I gonna not scuff this bloody thing after it's fixed???" ?
But at leat they will be "my dings and scratches, if you will. ?

So this neck has a white plastic trim that I have masked off, but the black paint keeps seeping through!!! Is there a way I can stop this? I had to re-sand the neck all over again, it's driving me nuts!!!

some updates from the spray and subsequent wet sanding. looks much better with the neck black! doing full spray tomorrow. need help on the neck though...

Scrape the binding clean once you have sprayed and it's dried. Then clearcoat over the top of it.

Check out Dan Erlewine making a quick & effective scraper, (page down one until you get to the "Shave" part) from a Stanley blade.

So, tape up, paint, don't worry about the "bleeds", and then scrape clean.

Another way is, . . . after dry, mask off above the bleeds, and gently steel wool the paint away. ?

Thanks Alan. I was going crazy wondering how the %$#! everyone else sprayed their necks so perfectly, haha!

Thanks for that!! I am letting the paint dry some more, it was a bit cold yesterday and some of it has unfortunately run on the body... So I see a bit more wet sanding and another coat in my future...
