Eurovision Song Contest

deefstes

Are any of you guys into the Eurovision Song Contest at all? Every year I feel some sense of excitement as the contest approaches and a large sense of disappointment when it plays out. I think the contest has deteriorated over the years but a part of me still wants to believe that another act like ABBA will one day burst onto the scene through the EVSC.

This year was no different. As with all years there actually were a number of songs which I thought were quite good - but the bad ones got all the votes. What the ef was the story with that Romanian dude? The eventual winner (Denmark) wasn't too bad but it certainly wasn't great. Some songs which I actually did like include:

France: Amandine Bourgeois - L'enfer et moi
Norway: Margaret Berger - I Feed You My Love
Ukraine: Zlata Ognevich - Gravity
Russia: Dina Garipova - What If
The Netherlands: Anouk - Birds

Did any of you guys pick up on a song that you liked?

Let's post some videos of the songs mentioned above, more or less in my order of preference:

Eurovision is a poisoned chalice these days. The winners have to host the next round, and a lot of countries don't want the expense and the bother. There was some talk ahead of the last Eurovision that several countries were rather hoping that their entrant wouldn't win. So it's quite possible that there are deals along the lines of "you don't vote for our song and we won't vote for yours."

That is too funny. We've known for years that theres a strong political and geographical bias of votes - but I always assumed it was in an effort to gain votes, not shed votes ?

Me and my used to watch it a few years back. Always struggled to view it, but sometimes it was on one of the Russian channels on DSTV.

Does any channel still broadcast it live? Would really like to watch it again.

Guess will have to google - thanks for the links above! ?

I watch it for fun just to see what the trends are, and the most noticable one this time was the almost complete absence of any RAP songs, which to me is a sign of hope..
Seems like most were rock dominated, but nothing really stuck in my mind,,, I think Ireland had quite a cool song but clearly Europe disagreed as I think hardly anyone voted for them?
I'm also not a huge fan of the whole you-vote-for-me-I'll-vote-for-you arrangements
As for Greece and their 'Alcohol is free'.... ??? :-\ :-[ ?

hhhhmmm Denmark won it this year ? I actually know a girl who was involved in that song (she wrote it, I believe).
A South african/Danish girl who used to live here in Cape town and gig quite extensively...I've not heard the song they put together with the Danish Entrant, but as a solo singer/songwriter, this girl really is phenomenal.
I think she was a runner up on Danish Idols or X-factor or something too... ? maybe she won it even?
I dont recall

True that. I didn't even notice but it's true and it is indeed a good sign.

Yeah, I specifically picked up on the rock theme - which is rather unlike Eurovision. In recent years (with the exception of that one year with Lordi), it seems to be dominated by cheesy pop music. So the stronger presence of rock this year is also a good sign.

Yeah, no seriously. That was one of the standout shockers - along with Romania of course.

I don't know that any channels broadcast any of it. I usually just watch most of it online.

We had our UK family out in 1976 when Brotherhood of Man with "Save all your kisses for me" had just won it , and they brought out posters and memorabilia especially for me. 1976 was my Led Zeppelin phase so I had to grin and bear it ?

The last time I ever followed the competition

But... listen to the French song above though and tell me it's not a good song - or at least some very cool guitar parts.
