:-\ Hey there, I'm looking for a multi-effects pedal/processor, preferably under R1000. I'm a beginner with a Fender Squier Strat and absolutely clueless about what to get. Can somebody please give me some advice? :sorry:

Don't worry too much about effects now. If you're a beginner they may get in the way by blurring the sound and obscuring errors in your playing.
Nothing wrong with effects, but put that money in the piggy bank and add to it at regular intervals until you do have some idea of what you want.
In the meantime listen to records and identify what appeals to you. Hang around music shops and try to get an idea of what noises the different boxes make.

Hi Navz666,
I'd first ask why you feel the need to get a multi-effects pedal? Reason I'm asking is that I swear that buying a multi-effects pedal (Zoom G2) back when I started out playing just served as a distraction. As a beginner, I had the effects but no skill and still sounded crap no matter how I set that pedal up, so I'm going to be That Guy and go ahead and suggest just practicing on your playing. Also, in my limited experience, multi-effects pedals on a budget sound terrible anyway; my zoom g2 has been lying in my closet for the past year, unused.
What kind of amp are you running on, btw?
Just my 2c ?

Thanks guys, I've been playing for about 3 years now, there's just some songs that don't sound right without the wah or overdrive that I wanted to play. I'm not trying to play professionally or anything it's just a hobby.
@wirt I've got the Squier SP-10 amp, it's basic, came with the guitar.

Good advice from the other posters... I agree but also feel that some fx could be a great source of inspiration and motivation to keep you practising as much as possible. I'd stretch that budget a tad and get a good 2nd hand Boss ME70. The ME70 has decent fx and can be used as "single stomp boxes" or as a multi fx unit. Simple to set up and get you going. Don't expect the fx to sound like the sound in your head off the bat. Many factors contribute to creating tone over and above an fx unit alone... Identifying those 'sounds in your head' and reaching the point where you're able to tune fx to help create them may take some time and experience...
Have fun and be inspired by fx but for serious practising, always use your 'dry sound', in other words, no fx, not even distortion when practising parts that require distortion to sound correct... The Boss ME70 unit could serve you very well for a very long time... With experience you'll be able to fine-tune the tones better and probably be amazed at what such a humble unit is capable of adding to your tone. Other advice: Get to know each effect well before combining them. Know what sound you're trying to create and sculpt one effect at a time to get you to the desired sound using the least amount of variables at any given instance. Also, less is almost always more when using fx. Especially if you're jamming with other instruments and not completely on your own. It's very easy to get lost in the mix if you use too many fx or don't have a fair understanding of tone/fx generation...
All of the best!

Damn... if you've been playing 3 years already it's more than I have by a long shot, just ignore my advice and do whatever you like ?
Although... I would think of getting a better amp before going for effects...
studmissile
Oh dammit someone was selling a Korg Pandora for a thousand a few weeks a ago that would have been perfect!
Navz666
@studmissile, just my luck. I saw a digitech RP50 second hand for R400, called the guy next day and sold.
@wirt. Yeah I think I should've used the word casual guitarist instead of beginner. I am looking for a better amp but every time I find one it's either sold or way way out of my price range. I just have the money on hand so I wanted to get what I could when I could instead of spending it on something stupid.

If you're a beginner I'd also recommend that you steer clear of effects until you know whats cooking... overdrive on your amp is all you need during the beginning phase...
if you're intermediate then I think a multi FX would be fun to play around and experiment with. Usually you find a zoom G2 for under a grand second hand. They're not bad at all... (Contrary to popular belief, Zoom really stepped up their game in the last few years... Their previous stuff was baaaaaaad!)
If you're already comfortable and want to experiment with sounds then I'd also suggest a MFX pedal preferrably with an expression pedal for wah's, volume swells etc. The boss ME20 and Zoom G2 with expression pedal are cool for this. They usually turn up for 1500 or so

@Chocklit_Thunda, thanks, I found a G1XN for R1000 brand new. I keep seeing a lot of great reviews for Digitech and Zoom. Wanted to see which ones were preferred locally seeing as we have a limited range compared to UK or USA ?

If the guys on here think this is a good deal. I will sell you a Boss GT8 Floorboard just about brand new for R1300.00 bucks. (only to a member here).

Yep. Well worth it. Sadly the GT-8 (and the GT-PRO I'm selling) are not worth much any more (being two generations old - such is the nature of most technology), but they are still very capable effects units (and can do some things that I miss in my rack now filled with TC, Avid and Focusrite gear).
LooneyAtTheGate
Take the GT8, its a great deal.
If not I have an old Zoom505 you can have for R150 if you want to experiment with some distortion, delay, auto-wah etc.
Shibbibilybob
That GT8 is a solid piece of kit. A few years old now, but still a great unit. That would be my choice...
Squonk
You will be a right plonker if you don't take the GT8 ?

☹ Dammit I was writing exams all this time and only logged on to see this now. I just got the Zoom G2.1nu
